Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse

Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse

(38 mi – about 1 hour  2 mins)

Located in Manistee county, on outer end of north pier. While Manistee began rebuilding immediately, the light was not to be replaced until 1873, when the new structure was augmented with a combination fog signal and light tower at the end of the wooden north pier. To make access to the light safer during stormy weather, this new light was outfitted with an elevated wooden catwalk running from the shore to the light.

South Manitou Island Light

South Manitou Island Light

(23.1 mi)

North and South Manitou Islands were settled while Michigan was still young, with European immigrants and the US Lighthouse Service establishing permanent settlements on the islands in the 1840s. The Islands were an important stopping point for ships on Lake Michigan, providing wood for the early steamers, food, and ice among other things. South Manitou Island also was the only natural harbor for 220 miles along the Michigan shore, and many ships weathered fierce storms there.
